What a cookie is
A cookie is a small piece of data a website asks your browser to store, then reads back on later visits. Cookies are commonly used to remember settings, measure traffic, or support advertising. Some cookies are essential for a site to function; others are not.
Strictly necessary
The calculators, guides and every other page on this site function without any cookie. No account system, login or shopping cart requires one, so there is currently no strictly-necessary cookie category in active use.
Analytics
Where an analytics service (such as Google Analytics) is active, it may set a cookie or use similar browser storage to distinguish repeat visits and measure which pages are used, so we can understand what content is helpful and improve it. This category is not essential to using the site and, for EEA, UK and Swiss visitors, is only activated after you accept it through the consent option presented on the site.
Advertising
Where an advertising service (such as Google AdSense) is active, it and its partners may use cookies or device identifiers to select relevant ads and measure ad performance, in line with their own policies. As with analytics, this category is not essential and, for EEA, UK and Swiss visitors, is only activated after consent.
Embedded third-party content
If a page ever embeds third-party content (for example a video or a map), the provider of that content may set its own cookies once the embed loads, under its own policy. We link out to third-party guides rather than embedding tracking widgets by default.
Consent management
For visitors in the EEA, UK and Switzerland, non-essential cookies covered above are not set until you have made a choice through the consent option presented on the site. You can change that choice at any time using the option provided in the consent tool, or by clearing cookies for this site in your browser settings, which resets your choice back to "not yet decided" on your next visit.
Controlling cookies through your browser
Every modern browser lets you view, block or delete cookies on a per-site or global basis, usually under Settings › Privacy. Blocking all cookies may affect how some third-party embedded content behaves, but will not stop the calculators on this site from working, since they do not depend on cookies.
